Winners of the 2002 Jane Addams Children's Book Awards have just been announced by the Jane Addams Peace Association. The winners will be honored at an awards presentation on October 18th in New York City.

"Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." is the winner in the Picture Book category. This highly visual biography offers quotes from the famous civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. These "big words" are paralleled with author Doreen Rappaport's brief narrative outlining the facts of Dr. King's life.

Striking overall page designs heighten the impact of the words, and Bryan Collier's artwork interpreting these facts in fresh ways.
"Martin's Big Words" was published by Jump at the Sun, an imprint of Hyperion Books for Children.

The only Honor Book in this category is "Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart," an innovative album of free verse poems written as a narrative and accompanied by artwork by Vera B. Williams. Amber and Essie rely on their own resources each day while their mother works to keep the family together, and their daddy is in jail for fraud.

These memorable images of resilient young children living on the economic edge was published by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

"The Other Side of Truth" written by Beverley Naidoo is the 2002 winner of the Jane Addams Children's Book Award in the category of books for older children. First published and honored in England, Naidoo's exciting novel concerns Sade and Femi, a sister and brother rushed from England following their mother's assassination in Nigeria.

Realistic ethical issues arise for this suddenly exiled girl and boy struggling to survive on their own. "The Other Side of Truth" was published in the U.S. by HarperCollins.

Rachna Gilmore's Honor Book novel " A Group of One" first published in Canada was published in the U.S. by Henry Holt and Company.

In "A Group of One" Tara Mehta is a contemporary young teenager who has lived all her life in Ottawa with little thought about her cultural heritage. Her visiting grandmother Naniji jolts Tara's previous understandings of her identity within her family and peer group by insisting that Tara find out about the Indian Independence movement in which Naniji herself had been active.

The other Honor Book in this category is "True Believer" written by Virginia Euwer Wolff and published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division.

The plot of "True Believer" unfolds in a unique narrative about 15-year-old LaVaughn whose entire world has gone askew. Her childhood friends have become religious evangelicals, the boy on whom she has a crush knows he's gay, and her usually reliable mother seems to have gone off course. School offers LaVaughn a thoughtful lab partner and a demanding teacher who makes certain that students who might otherwise fall between the cracks can gain the skills necessary for future economic stability.

The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards annually acknowledge books published during the previous year in the U.S. effectively addressing themes or topics promoting peace, social justice, world community, and/or equality of the sexes and all races. The books so honored must meet conventional standards for literary and artistic excellence.

The awards will be presented to each winning author and artist and to Honor Book recipients on Friday afternoon, October 18, in an event beginning at 1:30pm at 777 United Nations Plaza in New York City.

All are welcome to attend the awards event on October 18 to congratulate the authors, artists, editors and publishers of these books. Individuals planning to come to this celebration are encouraged to notify the JAPA office in advance, if possible.
