I am especially enjoying this discussion because I just finished the manuscript for my fourth guide to children???s books, Great Books for Babies and Toddlers: More than 500 Recommended Books for Your Child???s First Three Years. (It will be published by
Ballantine on April 1st, 2003.) So I have been thinking a lot about the sort of criteria already discussed, and delighting in the range of books available compared to when I became a children???s librarian in 1982--amazing.

I talked to a lot of parents while I was writing, and found so much enthusiasm for flap books and pop-ups that I had to overcome my librarian???s bias against books that are easily destroyed. Some of these toylike books are terrific. Where???s Spot? end ures, of course, Zelinsky???s Wheels on the Bus, and Robert Campbell???s Dear Zoo.
There???s also a successful use of flaps in Elizabeth MacLeod???s I Heard a Little Baa, Amanda Leslie???s Flappy Waggy Wiggly, Jeannette Rowe???s series Whose Ears?/Who se Feet?/Whose Nose? and Jan Ormerod???s Peek-a-Boo.

Not surprisingly, I had a lot to say about unsuitable board books, such as, ???Stick with the original version of this book because the board book doesn???t do justice to the pictures.??? On the other hand, some authors and illustrators doing original bo ard books are taking full advantage of the format and size, really keeping the audience in mind, as Tana Hoban and Helen Oxenbury have done for years.

I ended up with lots of new favorites including My Car, How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?, Book! by Kristine O???Connell George, Round is a Mooncake by Roseanne Thong, and Wrapping Paper Romp by Patricia Hubbell, to name only a few.

I wish I had found more books featuring African-American and Latino children. I also didn???t see many books for this age that show young children in child care. A friend who works in the early childhood field complained to me, rightly, that child care
providers who are reading aloud to babies and toddlers would like to read some books that show the environment they are reading in.
