For this particular age group, I appreciate artwork that, while it's imaginative, vivid and unique, doesn't mar an object completely beyond recognition, because a great deal of reading time is spent identifying and pointing at objects. I also like it when a board book's format works in harmony with text and illustration. Does it bug anyone else when a previously published book's stories and pictures are chopped and cropped and jammed between the pages of a board book? It's confusing, especially when the listener is familiar with the "real book". I'm happy we have authors and illustrators who create expressly for babies and toddlers.
Speaking of board books, it's interesting to think about how, on one hand, board books are being regarded critically more and more, and we're blessed with some wonderful contributions-- and at the same time, there seems to be a real rush on the repackaging of previously published books into board book editions, chopping out important pieces that "don't fit".
