G'day,

After an all to brief vacation from my summer library program, I am pleased to be able to jump into this conversation about Australian book creators.

I had the incredible good fortune to participate in a dynamic project titled, Down Under and Over Here: Children's Book Illustration from Australia and America. The project was a rich collaboration between the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and the Marathon County Public Library, both located in Wausau, Wisconsin. The exhibition included 60 original illustrations created for 21 Australian and 30 American children's books. Some of the contemporary Australian picture book artists represented were: Julie Vivas, Patricia Mullins, Graeme Base, Donna Rawlins, Peter Gouldthorpe, and Pat Torres. We were fortunate to be able to bring Bob Graham and Donna Rawlins to our community for a visit. This project was funded by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Bob Graham was our guest in Wausau for a week. He visited schools, did public programs at the museum and library, and charmed everyone he met. At the time of his visit, Bob had just completed Max. We feel quite privileged to be among the first to see his original sketches and artwork for this superhero. Bob was living in the UK at the time of his visit, but I believe has since moved back to the Melbourne area. Bob had never visited the United States before his visit in November, 1999. I take great delight in knowing that Bob came to Wausau, Wisconsin, and then to New York City before he went home. Not too many visitors have the opportunity to discover this country in that order.

I remember a conversation about the changes made to some his books, none of which bothered him much. Benny was published in Australia as Buffy. He said that that is a common nickname for a boy in Australia, but the publishers felt that it sounded like a girl's name in the US. Hence the change to Benny.

I'll share more information about Bob and Donna in another post. If you want to look at what is left of our project website, go to http://www.mcpl.lib.wi.us/downunder.html
