As we begin our discussion of children's and young adult literature from Australia, we encourage you to visit one or more of the web sites devoted to Australian literature for the young. For a listing of Australian book creators and other information about Australian children's literature, try the Lu Rees Archives
(http://www.canberra.edu.au/lurees/) at the University of Canberra,
"a collection of resources encouraging the study and research of Australian children's literature." Among their resources is a listing of Australiain children's book creators.

You might also want to visit the site of the of the Children's Book Council of Australia (http://www.cbc.org.au/default.htm). In addition to information about Australian childrne's book awards, on their links page, they connect to a listing of Australian authors and artists that provides additional information about each.

These lists can be helpful in making discoveries about who IS an Australian book creator, or summoning up a long-buried connection in your mind. It had escaped me that Jeannie Baker, creator of the marvelous books "Window," "The Hidden Forest" and many others is British-born but lives in Australia.

Richie Partington has given us a lively list to consider as we begin our discussion on children's and young adult literature from Australia. Let's begin by looking at picture books. Richie mentions both Pamela Allen and Allison Lester as favorites who are almost wholly out of print in this country today. He also mentions Margaret Wild (whose novel, Jinx, also mentioned by Richie, was just published in this country) and Mem Fox. Other names that come to mind: Gary Crew, Bob Graham, Frane Lessac, Nadia Wheatley--and of course Jeannie Baker!

What are some of your favorite picture books, or book creators, coming to us from Australia? What are the qualities you appreciate in the works?

Megan
