It's a bit unfair for those of you in the US who don't know Shaun Tan's work to comment. He is highly gifted. In my opinion, one of Australia's greatest living artists-and a friend. But, I did have a hard time with the
"The Red Tree"- whether it was appropriate with children. I needed the pre-lim information on display to understand the allegoricals. I do appreciate what he's creating, especially for secondary school students who hardly get the opportunity to explore picture books. Perhaps this should be in a new category for bookshops &awards.. Picture books for teenagers and adults. (Then I don't have to compete with him in the West Australia awards -ha!).
My favourite Australian picture book and last years CBC winner that transcends all age levels is "Fox" by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. Available in the US. Are any of you familiar with this beautiful book?
