Before the month closes out our topic on Australian chn?s literature, I thought it might be helpful to throw out a few more resources for those who would like to follow up and learn more about this field. I have just arrived back from a mild Southern winter into the stinking heat and humidity of north eastern US, and one of the refreshing things that had hit my desk to welcome me back was this month?s issue of my favorite journal ?Magpies: Talking About Books for Children? (Vol. 17, No. 3). This is one journal I cannot do without, to keep me abreast of all that is hot and new Down Under. It also includes articles and reviews on books/authors from other countries. For example, this month there?s a retrospective look at The Yearling; and New Zealand author Margaret Mahy speculates on the Earthsea stories.

An annual subscription of A$38.50 gives you five issues of Magpies. For all other countries (besides New Zealand) the cost is A$49.50, which gives you airmail delivery (not a bad deal for Americans when converting
about 55c; plus you get some pretty cool stamps). In recent years Mapgies includes a substantial supplement on New Zealand children? literature.

You can visit the Mapgies website for ordering information, details of the current issue, a cumulative index of all issues of Magpies and also of The Literature Base, another journal edited also by Rayma Turton: www.magpies.net.au (I had trouble accessing some of the links just now).

Also at this site, is a link to The Source, an online subject guide to children?s literature from around the world with an emphasis on Australian books, compiled by Kerry White and Rayma Turton. The Source is continuously updated and accessed through subscription ($A165). You can get a free trial password by emailing james at magpies.net.au

Magpies does welcome contributions.
