This is a great opportunity to sing the praises of Maurice Gleitzman, whom I also may have mentioned in a previous discussion of humorous books. He has the gift of handling serious topics (such as congenital muteness, in Blabber Mouth) in ways that don't discount the topics but also don't limit them. His work reminds me, in ways, of Ron Koergte and also Jack Gantos. Harcourt brought a few of his books out in the early 90s in hardcover and paper, but I think none are currently available, which is a shame.
I also agree with Robin about Bob Graham's Let's Get a Pup Said Kate. I love the way this family is represented.
