I'm a huge Margaret Mahy fan. She can write amazing stuff for all different ages. I know she is very prolific, but admit that my familiarity with her work is very eclectic. Sort of what I've stumbled across. The first book of hers I ever read was The Changeover. I recently reread it and loved it as much as the first time. 24 Hours was recommended to me ( because it has many Alice in Wonderland references) and while I admired it, I must admit it was too edgy YA for me to enjoy.

Some years ago I read aloud with great success her middle grade book, The Blood and Thunder Adventure on Hurricane Peak. A similar (and, to my mind, even better) read aloud was The Great Piratical Rumbustification and the Librarian and the Robbers. Last year I was introduced to her hilarious picture book, The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate. Now, would someone explain to me this pirate business; (Judith?) is it an Australian thing or a Margaret Mahy thing?
