Some years ago, Horn Book published an article about Wrightson's book, NARGUN AND THE STARS, and I went looking. Though long out of print (Please someone reprint them!), these are wonderful fantasies. Rich language, images of Australia that are rare and beautiful, and the fantasy creatures based on aboriginal myths are totally fascinating in their alien-ness. Yet, they are so believeable. All this in a book that is firmly middle grade reading.
At our house, everyone loves the old Potkorok! You can still find copies at used bookstores.
Wrightson's trilogy about a character who goes walk?out are more of a YA sensibility and, while I like them, they don't compare, for me, to the NARGUN.
