Thanks to all of you who have spurred me on to delve into the literature for older children that has come from Australia. I usually have reserved my study and energy on books for the younger set.
The project I worked on for the museum/library collaboration of Australian and American book illustrators brought me face to face with author and illustrator Donna Rawlins. Well not quite, since her 4 foot 11 inch frame barely came up to my shoulder. Donna could be an evangelist for the Australian publishing industry. She is a tremendously hard working artist whose work has occasionally, but not often enough, made its way to the U.S.
Tucking Mommy In, written my Morag Loah and illustrated by Donna Rawlins is the story of a very tired Mommy and her two very understanding children. The quilted endpapers are so soft I just felt refreshed as I reviewed them for this message.
My Place, written by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins illustrates the history of Australia through the recording of the inhabitants of one single plot of land in the Sydney area. Through scenes from family life and maps from each generation, readers meet boys and girls that have the same wishes and dreams as American children. My Place was the introduction to the history of Australia to many of the children in our community. They were surprised to see the similarities to their lives in a land that seems foreign in many ways. We loved using the maps to start many discussions about changing communities and environments.
Donna brought original works from Robber Girl and My Dearest Dinosaur along with her. As she did with Jen McVeity in Melbourne, she opened her portfolio and spread original art works over the floors of classrooms, gym floors and across the stage of an auditorium. She made many friends in Wausau.
