As usual, I'll chime in on the last days of a lively discussion. Back to
"Dinky Hocker" which I read and passed on to countless students when I was a mere baby (no, not a merbaby). It has always stuck with me how Dinky's mother had time for every cause and everyone in the world but her daughter. It reminded me of a much older non-j book, "A Child of Our Time" about a parent who cared much more for causes than for her child--a boy who ended up in a concenration camp. I read that book to my classes and watched their reactions. When "Dinky Hocker" was released I thought about the faces of those 7th & 8th graders whose parents--even before P.C. was invented--were its victims, as was Dinky. Now--more than ever--Dinky is far too real--and I weep for those children.
Thank you M.E. Kerr for uncovering so many worlds which we try to hide.
