First of all, I already mentioned to M. E. Kerr that I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments and questions about her work. As webmaster of mekerr.com, I often get questions along the lines of "Where can I find a detailed summary of ________ by tomorrow." Of course, there are the genuine comments. Second of all, I apologize for not following protocol and introducing myself. I was also just lurking. Anyway, hello, all. I hope it's okay if I respond to the Mary James comment even though I might be duplicating MEK's response. I know that 1) Mary James is a play on M. E. Kerr's real name "Marijane." Also, 2) yes, you are correct in that the James books were aimed at a younger audience. Scholastic put them out rather than HarperCollins. I know I'm terribly biased, but I think Shoebag is a great book, too! M. E. Kerr is also a fan of pen names so I think she welcomed the chance to create yet another one for herself. She has also said she wasn't sure what kind of response Shoebag would receive and thus she chose not to reveal that she was M. E. Kerr when it first was published. Unfortunately, the only Mary James book that is still published is Shoebag. Shoebag Returns is out of print though most people who read Shoebag are anxious to read the sequel. Frankenlouse is available in some libraries. I found a hardback copy at The Strand bookstore for $2. Can you believe it? And you can forget about ever laying your eyes on The Shuteyes. Anyway, I'm glad readers are able to access Shoebag. MEK has many adorable drawings of Shoebag, the cockroach, in her art collection. Maybe next year when you read Shoebag outloud to your class, you can also do a class project involving the author!
