Exhibition of Burton illustrations and conference

On October 11 an exhibition of the original illustrations of Virginia Lee Burton will open at the Haggerty Museum on the Marquette University campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "Virginia Lee Burton: Children's Illustrator, Author, and Designer" will feature original artwork from MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL, THE LITTLE HOUSE, and other Burton books; it will be the first time that these original pieces have been on public display. The six-week exhibit (October 11?cember 8, 2002) coordinates with the publication of Barbara Elleman's biography, VIRGINIA LEE BURTON: A Life in Art (Houghton Mifflin, October, 2002). In coordination with this event, Marquette University's School of Education will hold a one?y conference, "Yesterday's Classics/Today's Favorites," on Saturday, October 12, 2002. Speakers will include Karen Cushman, Steven Kellogg, Stuart Murphy, Ronne Hartfield, and Barbara Elleman.
