I read this book to my son when he was ten. While I appreciate all the layers in the book I truly think he laughed at the gross out humour. He almost wet himself when they blew up the frog and at the war with the rooster. He couldn't understand why I was wiping my eyes at the end. It remains one of his favourite books and I'd love for him to read it again now that he is a bit older (13) to see if he taps into the depth of the book.
