In talking about funny books I have to mention one that always stands out in my mind.
It's by Janet Lunn and is called Amos's Sweater. It's an absolute gem of a picture book. The characterization (with an economy of words) is fabulous and the illustrations are charming. The first line so neatly sets up the entire story, I think it's one of the best first lines I've ever read!
It goes: Amos was old and Amos was cold and Amos was tired of giving away all his wool.
I have read this book to my children from the time they were two and they've loved it! One of my twins even begged me so much for it, that she did extra chores in order to buy this book. She was six at the time. The other night I was reading it to my son, using different voices for Amos (the sheep) and Aunt Hattie, and my son was laughing so hard he had tears in his eyes. Now I didn't excessively dramatize the book. I just said the words in the kinds of voices I imagined went with the characterizations.
And it's a book I've never gotten tired of reading to them. That says a lot for a book, I think.
