Hello, I also love these books because the author uses humor and teaches word use and/or connotations of words and then plays with the language based on his prior definitions.

I'm sure the reader's understanding of word and meaning is enhanced even without the person being aware of it.

I admit that Mr. Snicket has tweaked my vocabulary up a notch or two.

When I use them as a selection for read-aloud programs, I have learned to interloan many extra copies for the children to check out. The humor appeals to quite a cross section, boys, girls, reluctant readers and lovers of reading all want the books.

The posting mentioned the subversive aspect of the books as appeal. To me I think the subversive aspect is that he teaches so skillfully while his readers clamor for more.
