I find Helen Cresswell's Bagthorpe Saga from the '70's and '80's still one of the funniest (and well-written) series around, and I remember feeling a great sense of loss after finishing the last (7th, I think) volume. I always had to "hand-sell" the first volume, Ordinary Jack, but after that most kids wanted to read the entire set. The premise, with many sub-plots and asides, is that everyone in this extended eccentric British family is exceedingly brilliant in different ways, except Jack, who is ordinary.
I also love the Blossom Family books by Betsy Byars, for some of the same reasons: strong characterizations, vivid writing, humor, and a strong sense of family.
