Laugh Out Loud Funny (At Least to Me)

I just finished writing a book for ALA Editions titled A Funny Thing Happened at the Library: How to Create Humorous Programs for Children and Young Adults. It will come out November 2002. Needless to say, I have been immersed in children's humor books these past several months. Immersed isn't quite the proper word. Magnify that word a thousand times. Comedy was coming out of my pores.

I was trying to figure out how to participate in this month's overwhelming discussion. I decided to share bits and pieces of my favorites throughout the month and see where that leads.

First - how about a little Pinkwater. His humor is not for everyone. But two of his most appealing books for general audiences are his picture books Author's Day and Tooth-Gnasher Superflash. Author's Day is really a gift for anyone who makes school appearances. The Melvinville Elementary (wouldn't it be great if there really was a Melvinville Elementary?) invites Mr. Bramwell Wink-Porter, the author of The Bunny Brothers, for a school visit. Unfortunately, they mistakenly think he wrote The Fuzzy Bunny, which all of you, of course, know was written by Abigail Finkdotter. The kids will laugh at the funny names. The adults in the know will see the humor in all the things that can go wrong (and right) with school visits. Tooth-Gnasher Superflash is just plain fun to read aloud. "Mr. Popsnorkle and Mrs. Popsnorkle and the five little Popsnorkles..." Everyone reading this, say that line right now. Didn't that feel good?

I love books that use wordplay and alliteration. I also like laugh out loud funny over the grown-up parody of Lane Smith, Chris Raschka, and David Wisniewski. I want to hear those kids howl. One that succeeds is Minnie and Moo Go to the Moon by Denys Cazet. The two cows believe the secret to driving the farmer's tractor is to wear his hat and repeat his magic words "YOU CHEESY PIECE OF JUNK! YOU BROKEN-DOWN, NO-GOOD, RUSTY BUCKET OF BOLTS!" Be sure to catch the illustration of the cow doing a side-vault over a fence while fleeing the farmer. I want a print of that on my wall.
