Many of you in the Madison area took the opportunity to hear Margaret Willey deliver her terrific acceptance speech for the 2002 Charlotte Zolotow Award for "Clever Beatrice." She spoke very movingly of the importance of "Some Things Go Together" by Charlotte Zolotow in the life of her daughter (now a junior in college) when she was a toddler, and even brought along the photographic evidence! There will be more about Margaret Willey and the Zolotow Award in the next Friends of the CCBC Newsletter.
Our colleague, Megan Schliesman, has just published an article about the first five years of the Charlotte Zolotow Award books in the April/May 2002 "Book Links," entitled: "Supporting Literacy--and a Love of Reading ? with the Charlotte Zolotow Award.
While we're on the subject of literacy and national publications, UW alum and CCBC Friend Susan Straub is featured in the May issue of "O-The Oprah Magazine." Susan has been leading a successful family literacy program with teen moms in the New York City Public Schools, called Read to me. You can read O's report on the program at: http://www.oprah.com/uyl/omag/uyl_omag_200205.jhtml
You can also view a 30-minute film about Read to Me on the ccbc website at: http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/readtome.htm
You'll find a link to the Read to Me website there as well.
