Ditto Rob Reid's mention of Author's Day by Daniel Pinkwater! In my previous role in the marketing department of a publishing house, I used to buy multiple copies of that book in paperback and send them to the active authors and illustrators for whom I set up author visits. To a person, they asserted that these hilarious experiences are much closer to truth than to fiction.
As Rob mentioned, Pinkwater's alliterative names are just hilarious: Bramwell Wink-Porter (an obvious play on Pinkwater) is mistaken for such authors as Abigail Finkdotter and Lemuel Crankstarter; I laugh out loud every time.
I think a real value of humor is to poke fun at sometimes frustrating situations. I certainly hope any author appearance hosts who read this are not offended; after all, most visiting authors and illustrators who continue to make school visits really do enjoy them, not in spite of the quirky things that happen in elementary schools, but because of them.
