Hilary McKay's new book, "Saffie's Angel" is hilarious in its character creation (more eccentrics) and locutions. At its heart it is also very deep and understanding.
Try it as a read-aloud and certainly as a "read to my very self" but be sure to have someone around with whom to share some of the situations, etc.
