I'm with Becky--our family loved Hank the Cowdog, too.
We read these books aloud when our boys were young, and had tremendous fun with all the different characters' voices. Yes, the humor is base and obvious, but the voice of Hank (who tells the stories, from a dog's point of view) is magical. Utterly loyal to his task of defending his ranch, and yet somewhat mystified by the finer points of life, he is irresistable to kids. My boys went on to read more of the series by themselves.
So glad you reminded me of them, Becky!
