In addition to Ginny's message and clarification, I just discovered the
"truth" in Leonard Marcus's new book, Ways of Telling: Conversations on the Art of the Picture Book, which is being published this summer by Dutton. In his interview with Jim Marshall (1989), Leonard asked why he invented a collaborator names Edward Marshall. "Walter Lorraine at Houghton Mifflin absolutely killed me at one point because I had published under the name of Edward Marshall with another publisher, Dial. But Houghton didn't do easy-to-read books, and Phyllis Fogelman at Dial did. So that was the beginning of Edward"... which was Jim's middle name.
He goes on to tell about the stories he made up on the whereabouts of Edward and how he and Phyllis "killed off" Edward during a lunch to the incredulity of the people listening at the next table. Typical Jim Marshallisms.
