I just have to mention the wonderful James Marshall. What a genius he was! His Fox books and his Three Up a Tree and Four by the Shore books are absolutely brilliant. Using a challenging format (Easy to Read), he created such appealing characters in Fox and his friends-?rmen, Junior, Dexter--and came up with stories that one can never tire of reading and laughing over. And in his illustrations, by moving just one dot for the characters' eyes, he would completely change his characters' expressions. Marshall's retellings of fairy tales are also extremely funny. I have read his Red Riding Hood to elementary school classes many times. They love the oh-so-charming wolf! And I can't forget to mention Space Case and Merry Christmas, Space Case! He gives the Goober Twins bullies their just desserts! Marshall was a consummate humorist, writer, and illustrator. I wish I had had a chance to know him.
