Abraham Lincoln

I want to thank Dianne Hess and Amy Cohn for their thoughtful responses to my query about ABRAHAM LINCOLN and the Emancipation Proclamation. This sort of open interchange is one of the joys, for me, of working in children???s publishing. I appreciate knowing how you came to your decision to state that the E. P. declared all slaves free. The verb you used in your ccbc letter: how the E.P. "led to" full emancipation would have satisfied me. You???ve written such an accessible, powerful, and attractive book that I expect it will find a wide audience and children will take what you say as literal historical fact. We???re not talking about trivial apocryphal events here
(chopping down a cherry tree,) or even national issues that have faded
(quartering soldiers in private houses.) We???re talking about racial inequality ??? a fire that continues to burn hotly, and to scorch every one of us. I respect the seriousness with which you approached your subject, even as I disagree with the decision you made. Thanks again for your response, and to ccbc for providing such a great forum for such discussions.
