I agree with this (#1). I noticed when my daughter picked up a book on Cleopatra from the "Royal Diaries" series, she only read the "back matter", and not the fictionalized diary at all. She has always seemed to prefer reading non-fiction
(she's 9 now over fiction. This is a little aside, but one dilemma we have is with the accelerated reader programs. In her school, they are required to read titles from the accelerated list, the vast majority of which are fiction titles, and then take tests on their reading, and accumulate points. I feel that it's great if they're reading -- period. We have tried to compromise by making sure she reads some things off the list, but also what she wants to read for enjoyment. This means she doesn't always reach the monthly goal, but it doesn't seem to bother her, and it doesn't bother me. It would be nice to see more of a variety on lists such as the accelerated readers, especially since such quality non-fiction is being published now for children.

Two points:
1. I think some (if not a very large number, but not necessarily a small one
either) children actually ENJOY looking at back matters and finding out some
extra information regarding the topic, without being required to (for a book
report.)
2. And since this month's topic is "creative nonfiction" -- maybe we can think
creatively and design the back matters to look NOT like back matters. If it
does not appear to be separated from the "book" itself, readers possibly will
continue reading to discover more on the topic. Or it can go one step further
and be fun or inviting.
