I am forwarding this message from Dianne Hess, Executive Editor at Scholastic Press, who is having some technical difficulties posting to the list. Megan
Abraham Lincoln by Amy L. Cohn and Suzy Schmidt
Thank you very much to Gretchen Woelfe for bringing this issue forward.
Amy L. Cohn and Suzy Schmidt are among the most thoughtful and meticulous writers with whom I have ever worked. The work was meticulously researched. And each decision they made was made with painstaking care. Every word they chose had a distinct reason to be. And their wording regarding the Emancipation Proclamation was the result of a total understanding of the material - and of their own very lengthy deliberations about how they could most appropriately and honestly convey this very complex material to young children while still maintaining the strength and coherence of their narrative voice.
Amy is away until tonight, but will complete her own response that will be posted tomorrow morning. We very much appreciate the chance to respond, and are grateful to the CCBC Forum for giving Amy and Suzy an opportunity to explain why and how they came to their decision to write their book in the way they did.
