As a publisher of nonfiction, I feel very strongly both that nonfiction for children be a compelling read and that it be entirely nonfiction. I don't think that the two are mutually exclusive by any means. Good nonfiction stories abound, and a strong narrative voice that exposes both the author's process and the underlying emotion of the material can very effectively immerse the reader without any blurring into fiction. The definitions make it clear that "creative nonfiction" is completely nonfictional, though I prefer Brenda's term "narrative nonfiction" as less confusing.
