SHIPWRECKED

Rhoda Blumberg extensively documents her sources for her longer non-fiction books such as COMMODORE PERRY IN THE LAND OF THE SHOGUN and THE GREAT AMERICAN GOLD RUSH. We enjoyed having those footnotes because they not only gave sources but also provided an opportunity to add information that would have hindered the flow of the text.

Rhoda and I discussed the matter of footnoting material in SHIPWRECKED at length. Because space was limited, because there is not much quoted material, and because we didn't see the need to amplify the text in the footnotes, we felt that a short bibliography to indicate her sources, along with an author's note would be preferable. Similarly, we wanted to engage young readers with an open layout and lots of room for good display of the illustrations, so space for the index was also a problem. I ultimately felt that the information included about the illustrations along with the author's note and bibliography were more important. It's obvious that both decisions haven't met with universal approval; in fact, they've hurt the book with important award committees. But they were choices made with considerable thought.
