The Wisconsin Library Association's Children's Book Award Committee announces the following 2002 honors.
The winner of the 2002 Elizabeth Burr/Worzalla Award is Understanding Buddy by Marc Kornblatt. This novel, set in Madison, features fifth grader Sam who tries to make friends with the new withdrawn boy, Buddy White. The story touches on religion (Sam is Jewish, while Buddy is a Jehovah's Witness), death, and friendship. The Burr/Worzalla Award is given annually to a Wisconsin illustrator for distinguished achievement in children's literature.
Alden Carter was named Notable Wisconsin Author in recognition of his literary contributions. Carter's works include Between a Rock and a Hard Place; Big Brother Dustin; Bull Catcher; The Civil War: American Tragedy; Crescent Moon; I'm Tougher Than Asthma; RoboDad; Sheila's Dying; Stretching Ourselves: Kids with Cerebral Palsy; Up Country; and Wart, Son of Toad.
The committee also recognized nine books published in 2001 for Outstanding Achievement:
Ambrose, Stephen E. The Good Fight: How World War II Was Won;
Bellville, Cheryl Walsh. Farmer's Market;
Carter, Alden. I'm Tougher Than Diabetes;
Cole, Kenneth. No Bad News;
Ehlert, Lois. Waiting for Wings;
Fleming, Diane Bresnan. Simply Wright: A Journey into the Ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright's Architecture;
Hautman, Pete. Hole in the Sky;
Johnson, Stephen T., illustrator. Goal. Written by Robert Burleigh;
Morris, Gerald. Parsifal's Page.
