General Information:

Founded in 1971, the Society of Children?s Book Writers and Illustrators, with over 17,000 members worldwide, is one of the largest writer?s organizations in the country, and the only one specifically for those working in the fields of children?s books, multimedia, magazines, film and television. The organization was founded by Stephen Mooser
(President) and Lin Oliver (Executive Director), each of whom are well-published children?s book authors and leaders in the world of children?s literature.

Many of the most prestigious professionals in children?s literature sit on the SCBWI Board of Directors. Some of those include: Judy Blume, Eve Bunting, Bruce Coville, Paula Danziger, Tomie de Paola, Sid Fleischman, James Cross Giblin, Walter Dean Myers, Jerry Pinkney, Barbara Seuling, and Jane Yolen.

The Golden Kite Awards have been presented since1973, and reflect the most outstanding work in children?s literature published in 2001. These are the only book awards that are judged by the peers of those submitting to the competition. There are four panels of three judges; each panel consists of author and/or artist members of SCBWI whose own work is in that of the category being judged. The works chosen are those that the judges feel exhibit excellence in writing, and in the case of picture-illustrated books ? in illustration, and genuinely appeal to the interests and concerns of children.

The Golden Kite Awards will be presented to the winners and honorees on Sunday, August 4th at the Golden Kite Luncheon. This luncheon is part of the SCBWI?s 31st Annual Conference on Writing and Illustrating for Children, taking place at the Century Plaza Hotel on August 2nd ? 5th, 2002.
