Megan,
You asked about responses to and experience with 'Chato's Kitchen'. I have read this book many times, it is wonderful! I am a volunteer librarian at an elementary school in Ventura, Ca., and when I read Chato's Kitchen aloud I got a tremendous response from the kids. In other words, they loved it! Susan Guevara did a fantastic job with conveying the tone and feeling of the story to picture. I had a crowd of children around me when I was finished looking more closely at the pages. And might I add, that while those kids of Latino descent loved having a story that they could relate to (even if it was about animals), the kids that were not of Latino descent loved it also.
Thank goodness, that while I am not of Latino descent, I did grow up in a very mixed culture, so I was able to pull off the accent, and read the words correctly! Oh, I gave the book to my nephew (who is half Mexican) and both he and his older sister loved it. She told me that they read it together many times. This is a boy who does not like to read! Or did not.
