Book of Coupons: illustrations, changes

I'll pick up on Arthur's question about the artwork with a question of my own. I love the illustrations, which remind me of New Yorker cartoons and Steig's work. Nothing about them says France in particular. I notice a couple of instances in which there are English words included -- on the book of coupons (title page & p. 12) and the card (p. 36) so it's clear that some changing was done. How do others feel about that? Given that this is for younger readers, was it necessary to change the words in the illustrations to be in keeping with the words in the text? Would it have been too confusing if the illustrations had contained French words? Susan Stan susan.stan at cmich.edu
