ccbc-net at lists.education.wisc.edu writes: I completely respect Marc's reasons for changing the title, but do want to point out that 4th graders are quite capable of appreciating the irony of the original title. Especially since the story they, like most US children, are presented of immigration is one of huddled masses looking to this continent as some sort of paradise, a golden mountain, a place with streets paved in gold. Story after story contrasts this dream with the harsh reality of New York's tenements, the Chinese Exclusion Act, and on into the present with the issues surrounding "English Only" and bilingual education. Again, I respect the decision to change the title, but still feel the original is much more powerful for all readers including 4th graders.
