We're ready to begin our discussion of the Michael Printz Award winner and honor books. This discussion will take place over the next several days through March 10.
The Michael Printz Award goes to the author of the most distinguished book for teens ages 12. More information about the award itself can be found at the ALA / YALSA website at: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/printz/index.html
To remind you call of this year's winners, they are: Winner: "A Step from Heaven" by An Na. (Front Street)
Honor Books:
"Freewill" by Chris Lynch. (HarperCollins)
"Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by Twentieth?ntury American Art" edited by Jan Greenberg. (Abrams)
"The Ropemaker" by Peter Dickinson. (Delacorte)
"True Believer" by Virginia Euwer Wolff (Atheneum)
This year's winners show not only a range in style and age level, but also demonstrate two features that make the award terms different from the Newbery Medal. (1) The award can go to an anthology (as with
"Heart to Heart") and (2) Winning authors do not have to be U.S. citizens or residents (as with Peter Dickinson, author of "The Ropemaker")
I hope some of you have had a chance to read this year's Printz Award winners and/or to share them with teenagers. Please feel free to share your impressions and opinions on any of these titles.
