As a member of the CCBC-Net Community, I would like to add a comment on the wonderful memories I have of Virginia Hamilton's connection with the CCBC. I'll speak to just one of many memories I have: I was on the planning committee for an anniversary celebration for the CCBC (30th I think in 1993?). We all sat around the room talking about who would be ideal to speak to mark this important milestone in the CCBC's history. The
"ideal," we all thought, was Virginia Hamilton, but there was a general pessimism about whether she would think of coming. Those of us in the
"nothing ventured, nothing gained" category said "Let's ask her and see."

Virginia Hamilton did come (gladly) and gave a magnificent speech that was later printed and distributed to the members of the Friends of the CCBC. I reread that speech the day she died -- and shared it with a class I was teaching. I heard Virginia Hamilton speak many times, but for me this particular speech was the essence of who she was. She spoke of her roots and of her vision -- of her part in a multicultural family and country -- and her hope for a gender fair world. She spoke of the term with which she became associated -- parallel cultures -- not minority and majority which denote a hierarchy. I always thought it was particularly appropriate that she delivered this speech at a celebration of the CCBC -- where her work was recognized and celebrated from its earliest days and where equity among cultures and between genders in books for youth has long time been a goal.

I know that Virginia Hamilton had great admiration and respect for what the CCBC and those associated with it have done. I heard her say it on many occasions. I like to remember her superlative contribution to children and adults and their worlds in the context of this community who admired and respected her and provided one means of celebrating her talent throughout her magnificent career.
