Book of Coupons

I read A Book of Coupons to my sixth graders last fall, early in their school year. It was a quick read (2 of our 20 minute sessions) and very popular. More than that, it stuck with my students who are still suggesting coupons to me, months later. More than that, they have told other teachers and students about the book. They imagined the French school as interestingly different. They appreciated the pace of the story, which resembles that of a short story. They enjoyed Monsieur Noel, the elderly teacher, and recognized the individual students as representative of people they knew themselfes. They (and I) thought the conflict was slim and not particularly well resolved. But they were so taken with the premise they overlooked any flaws. I look forward to reading it to another set of sixth graders next year.
