ARNE NIXON CENTER HOSTS CHILDREN?S LITERATURE FESTIVAL
The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children?s Literature at California State University, Fresno, and the Arne Nixon Center Advocates will host ?The Arne Nixon Children?s Literature Festival,? March 8 & 9, 2002, at the Residence Dining Hall on the Fresno State campus. Registration is $59, with an additional charge of $40 for one unit of University credit.
Rekindling the passion for children?s literature in the tradition of the late Professor Arne Nixon, the Festival proudly presents four of America?s top authors and illustrators, friends of Arne Nixon and former speakers at Fresno programs that he hosted. They are:
?Sid Fleischman, author of Bo and Mzz Mad, Carnival of Animals, The 13th Floor, By The Great Horn Spoon, The Scarebird, The Ghost in the Noonday Sun, The Abracadabra Kid, and the McBroom and Bloodhound Gang series. For The Whipping Boy, he won the 1987 Newbery Medal, awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the year?s most distinguished contribution to American Literature for Children.
?Thacher Hurd, author-illustrator of Cat?s Pajamas, Mama Don?t Allow, A Night in the Swamp, Hobo Dog, Art Dog, Zoom City, Little Mouse?s Big Valentine, Santa Mouse and the Ratdeer, Watercolor for the Artistically Undiscovered, and Mystery on the Docks, a Reading Rainbow book.
?Daniel San Souci, illustrator of 35 books including Antelope, Bison, Cougar: A National Park Wildlife Alphabet Book; Ice Bear and Little Fox; Red Wolf Country; Two Bear Cubs; Feathertop; Sootface; and The Christmas Ark; and author-illustrator of North Country Night and Country Road.
?Robert D. San Souci, author of Little Gold Star, Callie Ann & Mistah Bear, The Talking Eggs, Peter and the Witch Baby, Cinderella Skeleton, Six Foolish Fishermen, The Faithful Friend (dedicated to Arne Nixon), and Fa Mulan, which the author rewrote for Disney?s animated film Mulan.
?Angelica Carpenter, Curator of the Arne Nixon Center, will offer a tour of the Center and will also discuss her three biographies for young people: Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. Frank Baum, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Is it just a coincidence that all five of our presenters have strong family ties to children?s literature? Participants can judge at this literary event planned for teachers, library media staff, writers, illustrators, critics, researchers, collectors, and fans. This program qualifies for TAP grants and Eisenhower grants for teachers.
The speakers will autograph books at the Festival. The books will also be available for purchase during the week before the event at the Kennel Bookstore at Fresno State.
