The Virginia Hamilton speech Eliza Dresang mentioned, "Looking for America," was delivered in honor of the CCBC's Thirtieth Anniversary in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1993, and was published with Ms. Hamilton's permission as a limited edition monograph which was ditributed to members of the Friends of the CCBC the following year. As such, it was not made widely available at the time, nor has it been reprinted elsewhere. (It is not to be confused with an essay she published with the same name in School Library Journal in 1999.)

Many of Virginia Hamilton's fine speeches have been published in collections of children's literature essays. To cite just a few, I highly recommend:

"High John Has Risen Again" in CROSSCURRENTS OF CRITICISM edited by Paul Heins

"Changing Woman, Working" in CELEBRATING CHILDREN'S BOOKS edited by Betsy Hearne and Marilyn Kaye

"Ah, Sweet Rememory!" in INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE: EASSAYS AND CONVERSATIONS ON CHILDREN'S LITERATURE edited by Barbara Harrison and Gregory Maguire.

I also most highly recommend Virginia Hamilton's own website at http://www.virginiahamilton.com as a good source of information.
