I'm trying to help a patron identify a young adult sci-fi book she read in the mid?s to early 90s. An adolescent girl is on an exchange program with an alien culture whose members have longer limbs and two opposable thumbs on each hand rather than one. There is a scene that takes place in a spaceship where the girl needs to fire the guns of the alien culture, but can't because she only has one thumb. Any ideas what this book might be? Thanks.
