Although I don't know this for a fact, I would guess that the poems for
"Carver" were WRITTEN as a unified whole, and then sold individually to various literary journals while Marilyn Nelson waited the eons it takes to find a publisher for a poetry book (especially one with such a sophisticated voice). I can't imagine her having written them piecemeal; they meld so well. It often takes a long time (years) to sell a manuscript to a book publisher, and selling individual poems to journals is a way to make the wait bearable. This was true for the book "The Other Mozart," a poetic biography of Mozart's sister Nannerl, recently published by Sharon Chmielarz.
