Katie asked what others thought of Everything on a Waffle: anything particularly prize worthy. I'd be interested to hear other people's perspectives on this....<<

Makes me think of my eighth grade son's paper on Huck Finn that he finished up last night for English class. My son said that Mark Twain used all the narrative elements to create a good story and used the story to confront societal issues. Okay, I'm not saying that Polly Horvath is Mark Twain, but this book does about the same thing. Horvath came up with an intricate, page-turning plot along with subplots; she fully described the setting of the town, diner, and her odd home; and she created memorable characters. Like Mark Twain, Horvath rations out steady doses of humor and certainly takes her share of satirical potshots at issues: latchkey kids, town meetings, growing old, and cynicism, among others. Horvath even added recipes! (Imagine Huck's recipes heading down the Mississippi...)

Everything On a Waffle has everything a good book needs and, to me, was just plain fun to read.
