Here is Joe Cepeda's response to Bowie Kortla's question:
Bowie,
To add whimsey (although I've never called it that) is right. However, on an entirely different subject, a discussion with friends about God and his/her existence and other big questions, I remember feeling that it would be ashame to live your life and not, at the very least, having someone or something to bear witness to it. I wonder if, in some loosely connected way and not necessarily thinking of God, the bird (and the many other times that I've painted animals watching our human silliness) is a small witness to Juan Bobo's attempts at doing right. As a matter of fact, that's what it is. The bird is not only a little witness, but, also the one, like the reader, who sees Juan Bobo's goodness and earnestness while others perhaps cannot.
Good question. Joe
