Juan Bobo Illustrations: Bird?

Although the bird is not mentioned in the text, it is present in ~72% of the illustrations. Does the bird represent a protective entity? Is it an element of the traditional set of Juan Bobo folk tales (I didn't research them thoroughly, but did not encounter any mention of a bird)? Is it simply to add whimsey?
