Esperanza Rising came to my attention last year via this list or child_lit. (I think it was Jonathan Hunt who first pointed out the book to me to give credit where it is due.)
I liked the book as a story well told, but also because I teach a unit on immigration and was looking for good historical fiction on this theme. I've been frustrated in the past because many of the quality books on this topic are on turn-of-the?ntury European immigration and I wanted more stories on immigrants from other times and places.
I used it this year as one of several that children read, discussed and worked on in groups and the children who read it enjoyed it so much they convinced many of their classmates to read it as an independent reading book. The other four classes also used the book and the teachers and children all loved it.
Monica
PS I adore the chapter titles.
