Thank you to all who shared your responses--and insights into--the Newbery winner and honor books. We are certain discussion of these books will continue in many ways in the coming days, weeks and months as they are read by children and adults alike who turn to them them because of the Newbery recognition they've received.

We want to extend a special thanks to Linda Sue Park for responding to questions and comments and so generously sharing her own experiences in creating A Single Shard.

It's now time to turn our attention to the Pura Belpr? Award, which recognizes the outstanding book by a Latino author, and the outstanding book by a Latino artist,
"whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth." (For more information on the Pura Belpr? Award, visit the American Library Association web site at http://www.ala.org/alsc/belpre.html)

The Belpr? Award is currently given every other year, so books from both the 2000 and 2001 publishing year were considered by the 2002 committee, which chose Esperanza Rising by Pam Mu?oz Ryan as the author winner (Scholastic Press, 2000), and Chato and the Party Animals, illustrated by Susan Guevara (written by Gary Soto) as the illustrator winner (Putnam, 2000).

Honor books for the author award were Breaking Through by Francisco Jim?nez
(Houghton Mifflin, 2001) and Iguanas in the snow and other Winter Poems / Iguanas en la nieve y otros poemas de invierno by Francisco Alarc?n (illustrated by Maya Christina Gonzalez) (Children's Book Press, 2001).

One honor book was chosen for the illustrator award: Juan Bobo Goes to Work, illustrated by Joe Cepeda (written by Pam Mu?oz Ryan) (HarperCollins, 2000).

We look forward to hearing your comments about the Belpr? Award books.

Megan
