If not, what brought each to children's/Y.A. books in the first place?

I found a little about this in researching my new book Ten Hispanic American Authors (Enslow, 2002.) Not all the authors I profiled write for children, but of those who do I found:

Judith Ortiz Cofer Nicholasa Mohr Julia Alvarez were all approached by editors. Gary Soto tried writing for young adults after receiving so many fan letters from teens for his memoir Living Up the Street. Rudolfo Anaya Piri Thomas unknown. Christine M.
