Three Pigs

For the past few weeks, I've been reading three books about the three pigs to our first, second, and third graders. The books, all new to us this year, are The Three Little Pigs by Barry Moser, Wait! No Paint! by Bruce Whatley, and The Three Pigs by David Wiesner. I read them in the same order, starting with second grade. They loved the books so much that I tried the same thing with third and then first grades. The children enjoy all three books. The Moser book makes the traditional story fresh in their memories. Wait! No Paint! makes them laugh uproariously. When I read Wiesner's book, I find something new every time. Children also find different things. We all add our own comments, and it's a great shared experience. I started this hoping that the children would learn that stories change over time and that different authors and illustrators add their own interpretations. I think it works well.
