I was disappointed in "Tiger Rising." It seemed heavy handed and melodramatic, especially compared to the lighter hand of "Because of Winn-Dixie" (although I realize of course she was attempting a very different kind of book here). The caged tiger works okay as a metaphor, but you also feel it as a metaphor the whole time, which detracts from its power. I sensed the author's hand trying to convey meaning in the premise and the events, which made it hard for me to get involved in the characters. It has plenty of discussion possibilities, but I don't think it was especially engaging in terms of character or story.
